I note that the resolution to approve the naming of the High School North Baseball Field to be named the
David J. Bachner Baseball Field is on the agenda for the September 23rd meeting.
I do hope that all board members will be in attendance for the meeting Tuesday. This is such an important vote that I hope everyone will be able to make the meeting. It would be very helpful if the board could please comment on the naming at the meeting. I listened with interest to Tony Fleres comments at the last meeting. Listening to the board on this topic would be helpful for the community. I’m interested in your thoughts both pro and con.
It’s been reported in the news that some people want to make sure the district fairly honors all deceased community members. So is the question why should the north baseball field be named for one person and so many others not have the same privilege? This is not an equal world. As much as we try to award trophies to everyone, whether they win or lose, soon or later you can’t have every situation resolved so that all are treated equally. You shouldn’t dismiss one extraordinary person and their contributions from being recognized because you can’t equally reward all others.
I submit that this baseball diamond may have been recommended to be named the David J. Bachner field regardless if David had died. I submit that David could have very likely been drafted as a Yankee MLB pitcher with the talent he was exhibiting. And we would have been here today 5 years later celebrating his accomplishments and his future and requesting the naming.
Please don’t dismiss naming simply to keep all things equal. This naming request is about honoring David Bachner’s accomplishments both on and off the field. Not his death. This naming request is about recognizing the contributions David made to the sport of North Baseball. This naming request is about celebrating the best baseball player that may have ever had attended all four years at North.
I understand that some people feel that David was/is to young to have a baseball field named after him. I’ll remind you of my previous letter where I described the West Windsor Babe Ruth baseball field is named after Christopher Ciuffani who was 12 when he died. Why should there be conditions surrounding this naming request? Why must we consider the ramifications to such a degree. It’s a baseball field. It doesn’t have a name. Give it a name that reflects the plaque of David Bachner as you enter the area. Give it a name that reflects the painting on the dugout wall “DJB Forever #16”.
I hope to look forward to your voting YES on the 23rd.
Sincerely,
Tim Hitchings
